The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) announced that a 4.4-magnitude earthquake occurred in Elazığ. The earthquake, which took place at 00:05, was measured at a depth of 7 kilometers. Following the earthquake, seismologist Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ercan made statements on his social media account.
Recalling the 2023 earthquake, Ercan stated that the 4.4-magnitude tremor was an aftershock. The earthquake expert added the warning, "Solid structures on solid ground are the only solution," to his remarks, saying, "I would be surprised if a larger earthquake occurred."
Ercan's post is as follows:
"The small earthquake with a magnitude of M4.4 that occurred in Elazığ-Sivrice-Kavakköy on 2024.10.15 at 00:05 with a focal depth of 6 kilometers is a normal aftershock of the 2023 earthquake. I would be surprised if a larger earthquake occurred. Solid structures on solid ground are the only solution."
