Qatar has announced that it is suspending its mediation role in the Israel-Hamas negotiations. Following this development, the Israeli press has brought a striking claim to the agenda.
According to a report by the Israeli state broadcaster KAN, it was alleged that senior Hamas officials recently moved from Qatar to Turkey.
The report stated that this development could have 'dramatic' consequences for the ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas, which are being conducted under the mediation of the US, Qatar, and Egypt.
STATEMENT FROM ARAB DIPLOMATS
An Arab diplomat speaking to The Times of Israel stated that Hamas's leadership abroad already spends most of their time in Turkey when they are not holding meetings in Qatar.
Following these claims, an unofficial statement on the matter also came from Tel Aviv. Israeli sources speaking to The Jerusalem Post reported that there is no possibility of Turkey acting as a mediator in the negotiations with Hamas. The Israeli source who spoke to the newspaper said, "I am not aware of any involvement by Turkey, and I do not think it is likely to happen."
FOREIGN MINISTRY SOURCES: NO NEW ROLE
In the days leading up to the visit of Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to Turkey, Foreign Ministry sources reported that there were no new developments regarding Turkey's involvement in the ceasefire negotiations. Stating that there is "no new role or situation," the sources said that the necessary messages regarding the negotiations had already been conveyed previously.
WHAT HAPPENED?
It was previously claimed that after Hamas rejected the latest proposal offered for a ceasefire and hostage exchange, the US informed Qatar that Hamas's presence in the capital, Doha, was no longer acceptable. A senior government official, speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said, "After rejecting repeated proposals to release hostages, their leaders should no longer be welcome in any American partner's capital."
Hamas officials, however, stated that Qatar had not informed Hamas leaders that they were no longer 'welcome in the country.'
Following these reports, the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that mediation efforts in Gaza were being suspended until the parties showed the 'willingness and seriousness' to continue negotiations.
Ministry Spokesperson Majed Al-Ansari also stated that the reports regarding the Hamas political office in Doha were inaccurate, noting that the purpose of the office in Qatar is to serve as a communication channel between the relevant parties.
