The series of earthquakes that occurred in the Sea of Marmara, off the coast of Silivri, with the largest recorded at 6.2, caused brief panic in Istanbul.

As the earthquakes struck, many citizens left their homes and headed to open areas, while experts drew attention to the importance of being in the right place during an earthquake.

Many expert organizations, primarily the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), stated that aftershocks could continue and called on citizens to be prepared for possible new earthquakes. Taking the correct position and being in the right place during an earthquake can determine the difference between life and death.

DURING AN EARTHQUAKE INDOORS: WHERE SHOULD YOU STAY?

According to experts, the first rule for those caught in an earthquake at home, school, or work is: “Drop – Cover – Hold on.” However, it is very important that the place you are in is safe while performing this action.

Here are the safest places indoors:

Under a sturdy table or desk

Beside a bed or sofa (lying on your side and protecting your head with your hands)

Near load-bearing columns or corners of interior walls

Areas away from glass, windows, and tall furniture

Door frames, which were previously recommended, should no longer be preferred as they do not provide sufficient protection in modern buildings.

STAY AWAY FROM EVERYTHING

The basic rule for those who are outside during an earthquake is: “Stay away from structures.”

Things to pay attention to in order to stay safe in an open area:

Move away from buildings, trees, poles, and walls

Head to wide open spaces: Parks, school yards, sports fields, vacant lots

If you are in a vehicle and it is safe, stop and stay inside the vehicle

Move away from places like under bridges, viaducts, and building overhangs

The First Minutes After an Earthquake: Planned Action Saves Lives

It is necessary to be careful even after the earthquake has passed. Acting in a planned manner instead of panicking reduces subsequent risks.

What needs to be done:

First, check the safety of your location

Turn off natural gas, electricity, and water valves

Leave the building without using the elevator

Go to the assembly area and follow reliable information sources

Experts state that a large portion of the loss of life during earthquakes is caused by being in the wrong place or mistakes made in a state of panic. Therefore, it is of vital importance to establish pre-determined safe points in homes, workplaces, or schools and to share emergency plans with family members.
