Claims that İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Cemil Tugay, who stated he would take part in the YENİ Party to be founded by Özgür Özel after resigning from the CHP on June 18, would "join the AKP" continue to remain on the agenda.
Tugay, who stated in his remarks during the first days after leaving the CHP that "There is no such thing as me joining the AKP. Many district mayors and council members were going to resign with me, but I prevented them," had announced that he would continue his path as an independent following the establishment of the YENİ Party on July 24.
As the date of August 14, the 25th anniversary of the AKP's founding, approaches, it has been alleged that Tugay will join the AKP on this date.
While over 200 mayors across Turkey have resigned from the CHP with the intention of joining the YENİ Party, YENİ Party Group Deputy Chairman Gökhan Günaydın, who held a press conference in Parliament, was also asked about the claims regarding Cemil Tugay.
"I HAVE NO COMMUNICATION WITH HIM"
Stating that he has no communication with Tugay, Günaydın used the following expressions without naming him:
"I have no communication with him. It is clear where he was elected from, and the stance and attitude of the people of İzmir are also clear. Those who act in accordance with that stance and attitude can continue in politics. Those who say 'That attitude does not concern me, I will act as I please' will sooner or later see the necessary reaction from the public. We expect the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor to act in accordance with the demands of the people of İzmir."
EMPHASIS ON THE ASSEMBLY FOR METROPOLITAN MUNICIPALITIES
Günaydın stated that the reason metropolitan mayors are more cautious regarding party changes is the structure of the municipal assemblies.
He explained their party's approach with these words:
"Metropolitan mayors need to be more careful because metropolitan municipal assemblies are composed of members coming from district assemblies. Let us state our formula here once: Unless he explicitly says 'I will not walk the path with the YENİ Party,' it means he is walking the path with us."
