Evaluating the earthquake in Japan, Earthquake Expert Yoshinori Moriwaki also shared his expectations regarding a possible tsunami in Turkey and drew attention to 3 districts in Istanbul.

Speaking to Semiha Şahin on a live broadcast on CNN Türk, Moriwaki's statements are as follows;

"Education is provided from a young age. For example, through comic books. How does an earthquake happen, what should be done during an earthquake? It is explained. Everyone trusts the building. They run into the building in the back street. Outside, a sign might fall, glass might fall. That is why we stay inside the building.

When a contractor builds a building, there is a rule and they follow it exactly. Sometimes there are no illegal or unauthorized buildings. Normally, earthquakes in Japan happen on the sea side. But this time it happened on land. A tsunami also occurs. Since the sea in Turkey is small, I can say that it can be at most 1 meter, maybe 3 meters. Earthquakes larger than 6 happen 5-10 times a year like this.

It could happen in the sea after Hatay. That is why Mersin, Antalya, and Alanya are seaside. The entire Mediterranean. In the Aegean, it happened from time to time in Izmir last time, it was 1 meter. I cannot say 'there is no ocean, so there will be no tsunami.' If it is a small sea, whether it is the Mediterranean, the Aegean, or the Marmara, 'if a small glass is shaken, a wave will form.' Accordingly; a tsunami can happen, but it will be 1 meter. But if it is a worst-case scenario, if it happens with a landslide, I can say 3 meters.

If an earthquake happens in the Aegean... The Aegean is seaside. Izmir, the Muğla area, and the Fethiye area. The Marmara is the same. I can say 1 meter, at worst 3 meters. If you are in a tsunami, it is impossible to swim. If you are lucky, you might survive by holding onto a tree. No matter what, you must go to higher ground."
