Çiçek, who worked as a journalist for many years and was known for his work on recent political history and revolutionary movements, had produced many investigative reports that left a deep mark on public opinion.
Hikmet Çiçek had recounted a dialogue that took place before Deniz Gezmiş and his friends decided on armed struggle years later as follows:
"One evening, Deniz called us to METU. We picked up Deniz in a vehicle and were driving around the METU campus.
Deniz said that they would soon head to the mountains and start an armed struggle.
It was before Nurhak. He suggested that we join them. He wanted us to come along as well. Aktan did not accept Deniz's proposal. We said goodbye to Deniz. That was the last time we saw him."
