Initially taken to the hospital on the island, Cemal received treatment there. After doctors decided he should be transferred to Turkey, health authorities acted quickly.

Cemal was picked up from Leros by a specially equipped sea ambulance belonging to the Bodrum Sea Rescue Association and brought to Bodrum during the night. It was learned that Cemal was conscious upon his arrival at Milta Marina. Medical teams waiting at the port performed initial interventions before transferring the veteran journalist by ambulance to a private hospital in Bodrum.

During Cemal's arrival at the marina, members of the press attempting to cover the story faced off with private security guards at Milta Marina. The security guards, who wanted to prevent journalists from taking footage from the sea, intentionally rammed the press boat.
