Justice Minister Tunç: Numerous regulations have been enacted, such as strengthening women's rights

The 2026 budget and final accounts of the Ministry of Justice began to be discussed at the TBMM (Grand National Assembly of Turkey) Planning and Budget Committee, chaired by AKP Samsun Deputy Mehmet Muş.

Minister Tunç answered questions from deputies at the committee. Stating that the Ministry of Justice is the ministry that provides the most responses to parliamentary questions, Yılmaz Tunç said, "The regulation regarding the Covid arrangement benefited those who committed crimes before July 31, 2023.

There are complaints regarding this issue in terms of the principle of equality. This matter needs to be evaluated. This discretion belongs to the Parliament. Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and we are sensitive regarding violence against women. It wounds us for even a single woman to experience violence. Numerous regulations have been enacted, such as strengthening women's rights. Our Parliament has made many changes in this direction. Free legal counsel has been provided for female victims of crime upon their request," he said.

Stating that juvenile justice is frequently brought to the agenda, Tunç included the following remarks:

"Children are our future. Many regulations have been made regarding both child victims of crime and children driven to crime. The child justice center is a subject we prioritize. We want to put child justice centers into operation so that children can be tried separately from adults, away from the courthouse. We have implemented many innovations such as child handover centers. There have been public debates regarding the deterrence of incidents involving children driven to crime. How children are to be charged with crimes is regulated in the Turkish Penal Code. In this legal regulation, it is necessary to make a comprehensive evaluation regarding deterrence and children being driven to crime. The real culprits are the reasons that drive them to crime. In this sense, a parliamentary research commission has been established. We will follow our Parliament's report."

Reacting to the press freedom index, Tunç said, "Turkey is shown below Israel in the press freedom index. How can this be?"

Regarding the question about the investigation launched into the death of Rojin Kabaiş, Minister Tunç said, "We are following this. The Istanbul 1st Specialized Board of the Council of Forensic Medicine decided that the death occurred by drowning. 67 samples were taken from the victim's body. There is an issue regarding 2 different DNAs. It was investigated whether these DNAs were a contamination while being removed from the lake or sea. No match was found. No findings of sexual assault were found. We attach importance to the mobile phone. We have spoken with Spain, we are following it. We have held talks regarding the mobile phone. We are following the investigation to the end," he said.
