Karabük-Çankırı road and railway closed to traffic: Statement from the Governor's Office

Following collapses that occurred yesterday on the Karabük-Eskipazar highway, the road collapsed completely this morning, also closing the railway to traffic.

The Karabük-Eskipazar D-100 highway, located at the 6th kilometer, collapsed completely as of this morning. The collapse, which reached a depth of approximately 3 meters, caused tons of soil to damage and block the railway located beneath the road.

The collapse was attributed to the fact that drilling work previously conducted by railway teams in the region had been carried out while taking the necessary technical precautions, followed by heavy rainfall in the city which triggered the collapse and landslide on the highway, subsequently closing the railway to traffic. While the Karabük-Eskipazar D-100 highway was completely closed to traffic due to the collapse, transportation has begun to be provided from the opposite lane.

On the other hand, the collapse on the highway and the shifting tons of soil also caused the railway located beneath the road to cave in. The landslide and collapses, which caused the complete closure of the railway in the direction of Karabük-Ankara, also damaged the railway networks used within the KARDEMİR factories.

As a result of the complete closure of the highway, Highway teams have increased their precautions in the region and begun work, while the area where the collapse and landslide occurred was captured from the air by drone.

STATEMENT FROM THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE

The statement made by the Karabük Governor's Office is as follows:

"Due to the road collapse that occurred on the Karabük-Eskipazar highway at the Karabük exit in the Ankara direction (next to Kardemir), necessary measures have been taken and traffic flow is being provided in both directions from a single lane in a controlled manner. Our drivers must be careful in this area and follow the warnings and directions of traffic teams. The train line on the railway, which was negatively affected by the road collapse, has been temporarily closed to traffic. The General Directorate of Highways and State Railways teams have initiated work to reopen the highway and railway to traffic, and work is ongoing.”
