Kocaeli University students had called for a screening of the film Beynelmilel at the Faculty of Communication's May 3rd Lecture Hall. The event, which was announced to be held in the May 3rd Lecture Hall, was canceled under the pretext of cleaning work in front of the hall.
EVENT NOT PERMITTED
According to the report in Sözcü, when the students saw that the lecture hall was closed as the screening time approached, they moved to an alternative classroom to watch the film. However, this time, Faculty Secretary M.A. intervened.
Stating that the event was not permitted, the faculty secretary prevented the students from continuing the screening, saying, “This event will not be held here.” When students asked for the reason, he replied, “You did not get permission from me. You are violating the rights of students who could not get event permits.”
“THE PURPOSE IS NOT TO WATCH THE FILM BUT TO COMMEMORATE SIRRI SÜREYYA ÖNDER”
While the film screening was taking place, faculty security also intervened, claiming that the event was “creating noise” and “constituted a crime because it hindered education and training.”
It was learned that the faculty secretary did not allow the students who wanted to continue the film screening by closing the door.
It is alleged that Faculty Secretary M.A., who did not allow the students to close the door, told university staff who asked him why the event was not being held, “Their purpose is not to watch the film, but to commemorate Sırrı Süreyya Önder.”
