Fatih Mosque Imam Galip Usta and a member of the mosque congregation were wounded with a knife by an attacker after prayers.

HE CAME DURING THE FIRST AFTERNOON PRAYER

According to the information obtained, the suspect Ömer S. first came to Fatih Mosque during the afternoon prayer. Allegedly, during the prayer, Ömer S. shouted, "Allahu Akbar, remove the idols from the mosque," and Mosque Imam Galip Usta told the suspect not to shout inside the mosque. Following this, the suspect was removed by the congregation and a security guard.

HE RETURNED IN THE EVENING AND STABBED THEM

Returning to the mosque around 19:15 in the evening, the suspect Ömer S. went to the mosque before the night prayer this time and attacked Imam Galip Usta, who was teaching students after the prayer, with a knife. At that moment, Bilal Erdem, a student from the congregation, intervened and was also stabbed.

POLICE NEUTRALIZED HIM

A police officer from the Yunus teams, who was in the vicinity of the mosque at the time, quickly went to the scene and apprehended the suspect. The interrogation of the suspect, who was taken to the Homicide Bureau for questioning, is ongoing.

HE BEAT A CHEMIST IN BURSA

The profile of the suspect Ömer S., whose processing at the police station continues, has been revealed. According to the information obtained, Ömer S. married in 2012. The suspect, Ömer S., who lived in Bursa and worked in his father's spare parts shop, divorced in 2019. The suspect, who has two children from this marriage, assaulted chemist Samet N. in Bursa on January 7, one day before the mosque attack. The suspect then came to Istanbul and carried out this incident. During the investigation, it was learned that the suspect, who has a criminal record for wounding, possessed a rifle with a license valid until 2028.

HE HAD NOT BEEN HOME FOR A WEEK

The Homicide Bureau teams are conducting a wide-ranging investigation into the detained suspect Ömer S. The work revealed that the suspect had not been to his home in Bursa for a week. It was learned that his father, who was brought from Bursa, told the police that he had not seen his son for a week. The police are continuing extensive efforts to determine where the suspect, who had not been home for a week, was staying and who his connections were.

BURSA POLICE WERE SEARCHING FOR HIM

It turned out that the suspect Ömer S. was being sought by the Bursa police. It was stated that Ömer S., who allegedly beat and assaulted chemist Samet N. on the grounds that he had a relationship with his ex-wife, was being sought by the Bursa police in connection with this incident. While his father was giving a statement to the Istanbul police, his ex-wife is also having her statement taken by the police in Bursa.

REFERRED TO THE PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE

The suspect Ömer S. was referred to the prosecutor's office after his statement. To prevent members of the press from taking footage as he left the Gayrettepe Public Security Branch Directorate, the suspect Ömer S. was taken out through the parking lot.

Furthermore, it was revealed that the suspect Ömer S. did not give a statement at the Homicide Bureau and exercised his right to remain silent.

Finally, Ömer S., who carried out the knife attack at Fatih Mosque in which the imam and one other person were seriously wounded, was referred to the duty magistrate with a request for arrest following his statement at the prosecutor's office.
