Lawsuit filed against Somali President's son

A lawsuit has been filed against Mohammed Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the son of the Somali President, who caused the death of a motorcycle courier while driving in traffic in Istanbul on November 30, 2023, on charges of "causing death by negligence." The indictment seeks a prison sentence of 2 to 6 years for the suspect.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Motorcycle courier Yunus Emre Göçer, who was seriously injured in an accident that occurred at the Aksaray exit of the Eurasia Tunnel on November 30, could not be saved despite medical intervention at the hospital where he was taken. Mohammed Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the son of Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who was released after being detained as part of the investigation conducted by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, had been issued a travel ban.

The expert report requested by the prosecutor's office regarding the suspect's level of fault determined that the vehicle driver was "primarily at fault." In the report, the suspect, whose statement was included, claimed that Göçer had suddenly braked and turned right without signaling, and that he had also braked but could not stop in time and hit the motorcycle.

As part of the investigation, an arrest warrant had been issued for the driver, Mohammed Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. Meanwhile, the prosecutor's office also launched an ex officio investigation into the police officers who provided the initial fault assessment report that found the driver "faultless," as well as allegations circulating on social media that police officers had called Göçer's wife to tell her that he had committed suicide.
