Lawsuit over insults against fallen police officer Şeyda Yılmaz: Requested sentence announced

The indictment prepared by the Istanbul Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor's Office recalled that police officer Şeyda Yılmaz, who served at the Istanbul Provincial Security Directorate, was martyred as a result of an armed attack while performing her duty on September 23.

The indictment stated that an investigation was launched following reports of posts containing insults regarding the fallen police officer, and it was determined that the person who made the comments in question was the defendant Uğur Bostan.

The indictment noted that in his statement, defendant Uğur Bostan did not accept the accusations, claiming that he had shared a photograph of the fallen police officer Şeyda Yılmaz but did not write the text in question directed at Yılmaz.

The indictment recorded that the defendant publicly shared the posts containing insulting expressions along with Yılmaz's photograph more than once via his Instagram social media account and the WhatsApp application installed on his mobile phone in a way that everyone in his contact list could see.

INDICTMENT ACCEPTED

The indictment stated that it was understood from the defendant's posts that he was "praising the individual who carried out the attack in which Şeyda Yılmaz was martyred and the crime he committed," and that the defendant Uğur insulted the memory, honor, dignity, and reputation of the fallen police officer.

In the indictment, it was requested that the detained defendant Bostan be sentenced to imprisonment for up to 3 years and 6 months for the crime of "insulting the memory of a person in a chain manner" and up to 3 years and 6 months for the crime of "praising a crime and a criminal in a chain manner."

The prepared indictment was accepted by the Anatolian Criminal Court of First Instance, to which it was sent for evaluation.
