Lawyer cites secularism, files motion to recuse judge
The Ankara 1st High Criminal Court has filed a complaint against a lawyer who, during a hearing, requested the recusal of the presiding judge and a member judge on the grounds that their wearing of headscarves was "contrary to secularism."

During a hearing held on May 14 at the 1st High Criminal Court regarding a case of "drug trafficking or supply," defense attorney Alperen D., representing the detained defendant S.B., argued that his client was not receiving a fair trial.

Taking the floor, Alperen D. stated, "The Republic of Turkey is a secular state of law. The independence of the court is guaranteed by the Constitution. I am requesting the recusal of the presiding judge and the member judge who are performing their duties with religious symbols."
Announcing its interim decision following the lawyer's motion for recusal, the court ruled that no further action would be taken on the case until the motion to recuse the presiding and member judges was resolved, and adjourned the hearing until July 2.
COMPLAINT FILED WITH THE BAR ASSOCIATION
It has been learned that the court panel has filed a complaint with the Ankara Bar Association No. 1 regarding the lawyer's statements.
