Left-wing alliance wins election: French Prime Minister resigns

French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced that he will submit his resignation to French President Emmanuel Macron tomorrow following the early general elections in which the left-wing alliance New Popular Front emerged as the winner.

The general election results in France have been determined. Congratulating the 577 newly elected deputies, Attal stated that he did not choose the decision to dissolve the National Assembly and that he refuses to bear the consequences of it.

Stating that they decided to fight with the candidates of the "Together for the Republic" alliance, Attal noted that "extremist parties" could not form an absolute majority in the Assembly.

Pointing out that their own alliance also failed to reach a majority in the Assembly, Attal said, "The political group I represent in this election cannot secure a majority this evening. In accordance with republican tradition and my principles, I will submit my resignation to the President tomorrow morning."

Gabriel Attal stated the following:

"Tonight, a new era begins for our nation. From tomorrow on, the center of gravity of power will be, more than ever, in the hands of Parliament, in the hands of the nation's representatives, and therefore in the hands of our citizens, through the will of the French people."

Prime Minister Attal assessed that the far-right reached a historic score in this election.

Attal was elected as a deputy in the 2nd round of the general elections in the 10th constituency of Hauts-de-Seine, receiving 61.62 percent of the votes.
