License revocations and fines up to 180,000 TL were coming: New traffic law unexpectedly suspended!

The draft law, which introduces heavy monetary fines and sanctions for traffic violations, has been temporarily suspended. The regulation in question was planned to be discussed in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) last week. However, due to a change in the calendar, the proposal is expected to be reconsidered after the budget negotiations.

Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya had made important statements regarding the new era in traffic in recent days. Yerlikaya had stated that drivers should be more careful and that violations endangering life safety would be punished in a deterrent manner.

According to the bill, strict sanctions would be applied if the 30-kilometer speed limit determined in sensitive areas such as schools and hospitals is exceeded.

Accordingly;

• Those driving at 76 km/h would have their licenses revoked for 30 days,
• Those driving at 86 km/h for 60 days,
• And those driving at 96 km/h for 90 days.

In addition, drivers who exceed the speed limit five times within a year would be referred to a psychiatry specialist.

RECORD FINES FOR DANGEROUS DRIVING

The new draft law also envisioned record fines for dangerous behaviors such as "weaving through traffic," "driving in the wrong direction," and "blocking the road."

• The penalty for weaving through traffic in residential areas was set at 90,000 TL and a 60-day license revocation,
• The penalty for driving in the wrong direction on a one-way road at 10,000 TL,
• The penalty for entering the wrong direction on a divided road at 20,000 TL,
• And the penalty for driving in the wrong direction on a highway was determined as 90,000 TL and a 60-day license suspension.

A 90,000 TL fine and 60-day license revocation were also to be introduced for those blocking the road in wedding convoys. For those blocking the road on bridges, tunnels, and viaducts, a 180,000 TL fine, 120-day license revocation, and a ban from traffic were to be applied.

46,000 TL FINE FOR DRIVERS WHO DO NOT YIELD TO AMBULANCES

Sanctions against those who do not yield to ambulances, fire trucks, and police vehicles with right-of-way were also tightened. Drivers committing this offense would be subject to a 46,000 TL fine, a 30-day ban from traffic, and license revocation.

Furthermore, the licenses of drivers found to have failed to yield to an ambulance or fire truck twice within five years would be permanently revoked.
