Mahir Polat, Deputy Secretary General of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), who was arrested as part of an investigation into the IMM and sent to the Marmara Closed Penal Institution in Silivri, has fallen ill. Polat's lawyer, Erkam Erdem, shared the latest update on his health condition with 12punto.
Stating that Polat has 6 stents due to a heart condition, Erdem said:
“His blood pressure spiked yesterday and they gave him sublingual medication. He already had 6 stents. The last 2 were inserted two weeks ago. He was under doctor's supervision. Two vessels were also being monitored. The prison doctor has decided that he should be transferred to cardiovascular surgery. I am trying to find out whether they will transfer him today or if it has been left for tomorrow. I am currently on my way to Silivri. I was told he would be transferred to Silivri State Hospital, but I am going there to confirm whether they have taken him out yet or if he is still in prison.”
'OUR REQUEST FOR JUDICIAL CONTROL WAS REJECTED'
Stating that they had submitted a comprehensive medical report to the prosecutor's office on the grounds that it would be risky for Polat to remain in prison, and that they had requested judicial control instead of arrest for Polat, Erkam Erdem said:
“We established contact with both law enforcement and the prosecutor's office regarding the fact that his health conditions are not suitable for staying in prison. We submitted comprehensive medical reports to the prosecutor's office. We specifically presented the reports to the Public Prosecutor. When we appeared before the Criminal Judgeship of Peace and were referred for arrest, we said, 'Consider his health status and apply judicial control.' This request of ours was rejected.
In addition to all the reports we received from his doctor, we are also trying to obtain other reports regarding his current situation. We had already submitted a very comprehensive report regarding his health status to the file.”
