Marriage and divorce rates in Turkey announced: Foreign brides and grooms draw attention
According to the Marriage and Divorce Statistics shared by TUIK, 568 thousand 395 couples got married in 2024, while the number of divorcing couples was 187 thousand 343.

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) has published marriage and divorce data for the year 2024. According to the released data, while a slight increase was observed in the number of couples getting married, the rise in divorces drew attention.
Marriages are Increasing, But Divorces are Also on the Rise
While 567 thousand 11 couples tied the knot in 2023, this figure rose to 568 thousand 395 in 2024. In contrast, divorces also showed an increase. While 173 thousand 342 couples parted ways in 2023, this number rose to 187 thousand 343 in 2024.
MARRIAGE AGE IS GRADUALLY RISING
When compared to previous years, it was observed that couples prefer older ages for marriage. As of 2024, the average age at first marriage reached 28.3 for men and 25.8 for women. The average age difference at first marriage between men and women was recorded as 2.5 years.
HIGHEST MARRIAGE RATE IN ADIYAMAN, HIGHEST DIVORCE RATE IN ANTALYA
The province with the highest marriage rate was Adıyaman with 7.76 per thousand. Gaziantep and Kilis also ranked high in marriage rates. On the other hand, the city with the highest divorce rate was Antalya with 3.29 per thousand. Antalya was followed by İzmir and Karaman.
FOREIGN BRIDES AND GROOMS
In 2024, 5 thousand 923 foreign grooms and 29 thousand 115 foreign brides were married in Turkey. Syrian grooms ranked first with 20.6 percent, followed by German and Afghan grooms. Among foreign brides, Syrian and Uzbek women were the most preferred with 12.1 percent.
ONE-THIRD OF DIVORCES OCCURRED IN THE FIRST FIVE YEARS
When evaluated in terms of marriage duration, 33.7 percent of the divorces that took place in 2024 occurred within the first five years. The number of children affected by divorce was recorded as 186 thousand 536. Custody of the children was given to mothers in 74.4 percent of cases and to fathers in 25.6 percent.
The data announced by TUIK reveals that the dynamics of marriage and divorce in Turkey are changing.
