CHP Istanbul Provincial Chair Özgür Çelik held a meeting with Istanbul Governor Davut Gül to advocate for opening Taksim Square on May 1st.

Republican People's Party (CHP) Istanbul Provincial Chair Özgür Çelik visited Istanbul Governor Davut Gül.

Reminding the Constitutional Court's 2023 ruling that "being in Taksim on May 1st is the right of all workers and laborers," Çelik shared the following statements in a post on his social media account:

"We visited Istanbul Governor Mr. Davut Gül in his office. We expressed our gratitude for his contributions to the smooth conduct of the local election process in Istanbul and shared our thoughts regarding the May 1st celebrations. May 1st is a day of unity, struggle, and solidarity.

"WORKERS WANT TAKSIM"

Since 1977, Taksim has been the symbol of May 1st in our country and the world. Celebrations were held in Taksim without incident between 2010 and 2012, but the square has been closed to workers again since 2013. According to the 2023 Constitutional Court ruling, 'being in Taksim on May 1st is the right of all workers and laborers.' Workers and laborers want to voice their demands for bread, justice, democracy, and a social state governed by the rule of law in Taksim on May 1st.

"THERE SHOULD BE NO CONFRONTATION" 

The demand of laborers—whose bread is shrinking day by day due to rising inflation, who bear an unfair share of the country's tax burden, and who fall victim to workplace homicides—to celebrate May 1st in Taksim is their most natural right! With these thoughts in mind, we conveyed to Istanbul Governor Mr. Davut Gül our wishes for the May 1st celebrations, led by trade unions, to take place peacefully and for laborers and security forces not to come into confrontation."
