Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya stated that Taksim Square was not among the areas designated as rally sites for May Day, declaring, "Taksim is not suitable for May Day."
Following this statement, CHP Chairman Özgür Özel called Minister Yerlikaya.
Özel requested that Yerlikaya reconsider the May Day decision.
Emphasizing the symbolic importance of Taksim and May Day, Özel stated that as the leader of the main opposition party, he would vouch for the May Day celebrations to be held in Taksim without any issues, and informed him that CHP members could also serve on duty on May Day if necessary.
