It is the 50th anniversary of the Cyprus Peace Operation, which remains in memory with the coded instruction “Ayşe should go on vacation” from former Prime Minister Bülent Ecevit and which initiated the process leading to the establishment of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

Journalist and author Mehmet Ali Güller made significant reminders, calling it “Erdoğan’s Cyprus report card full of failures.” AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s speech, in which he stated that a certain amount of land could be given up in the TRNC, has returned to the agenda.

Mehmet Ali Güller described the Cyprus report card as follows:

“Erdoğan’s Cyprus report card is full of failures… For example: The year is 2004… Erdoğan is in the USA… The place is Harvard University… Erdoğan is speaking, Egemen Bağış is translating… A question comes from the audience: ‘Will you give up 1 meter of land?’ Erdoğan gives the following answer: ‘Currently, 36 percent of the island is the living space of the TRNC. We can give up a certain amount of such land. As a guarantor country, we would recommend it. The TRNC will show this approach.’”

Erdoğan’s Cyprus report card is full of failures. For example: In his book, Westmacott describes how they persuaded Foreign Minister Abdullah Gül and Prime Minister Erdoğan to make unilateral concessions, primarily the signing of the Ankara Protocol, which envisioned opening Turkish ports and airports to the GCA (Greek Cypriot Administration), and how the promises made to Turkey remained unfulfilled.

Erdoğan’s Cyprus report card is full of failures. For example: They even attempted to withdraw troops from the TRNC!”
