Mehmet Metiner booed while visiting to pay condolences for Sırrı Süreyya Önder: He issued a statement regarding the incident

Thousands of people who heard the news of the passing of Önder, who was receiving treatment at a private hospital in Şişli, came to the front of the hospital to pay their condolences. Due to the growing crowd, DEM Party officials directed citizens to the Nazım Hikmet Cultural Center so that other patients receiving treatment at the hospital would not be affected.

Former AKP deputy Mehmet Metiner, who is from Adıyaman like Sırrı Süreyya Önder, also arrived at the hospital to pay his condolences, but citizens protesting Metiner in front of the hospital and demanding his removal chanted, "Fascists out, Metiner out." Following a brief period of tension, Metiner left the hospital.

I went to the hospital many times during Sırrı Süreyya Önder's illness. I met with his family and DEM executives there countless times. I wrote a comprehensive article about Sırrı Süreyya in my column in Yeni Şafak last week. Those who know, know how selflessly I worked for the peace process.

Today, as soon as I heard of his passing, I rushed to the hospital. Before that, I connected to several television channels to express my feelings and thoughts regarding his passing. I stand behind every word I expressed with tears and emotion. Even if our politics and worlds are different, Sırrı is a fellow townsman I value. We have an acquaintance dating back many years.

I appreciated the contribution he made to the peace process before anyone else and more than anyone else. I said this everywhere. He was truly a value of our Turkey that emerged from our Adıyaman. Today, our country lost a valuable son. I went to the hospital with an indescribable sadness weighing on my heart. I was booed at the entrance. I was subjected to very ugly curses and insults. I wish those people whose hearts are full of malice and hatred knew the meaning of peace. I am sure that those who angrily chanted "Fascists out" are not aware of what they are doing. They have not been able to understand what Sırrı Süreyya was trying to do either.

Everything is for peace and for the sake of the peace process. If we succumb to our ego and become prisoners of our anger, we will both lose and cause others to lose, let it be known!"
