Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek's use of the term 'local people' at an IMF meeting has caused reactions in the public eye.

MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli reacted sharply to Şimşek's 'local people' expression in the message he published for the April 23 National Sovereignty and Children's Day.

Bahçeli stated, "No one will be able to deny that the corrupt mentality that serves to devalue the Turkish nation with the term 'local people' is the primary culprit of the scandals we have been exposed to in recent days."

"WE SAW IT WAS EXPLOITED"

Following Bahçeli's sharp reaction, a statement came from Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek.

Speaking to TRT Haber, Şimşek argued that his words were exploited.

Stating that the term "local" was distorted, Şimşek said, "At a meeting, we said, 'Global investors trust Turkey's program. Now it is time to convince local investors.' We saw how this matter was exploited internally. We are very surprised here. Because if a terminology used in finance is taken out of context, it leads to unnecessary debates."

THE MINISTRY HAD ISSUED A STATEMENT

On the other hand, in a statement made by the Treasury and Finance Ministry yesterday (April 22), it was stated that Mehmet Şimşek used the term "local investor," not "local people."
