Meral Akşener's statement on the agenda: 'It is the duty of those who govern'

Former İYİ Party Chair Meral Akşener shared a post regarding the incidents of violence against women and murders that occurred in Istanbul on the same day. Akşener addressed the authorities and spoke about the importance of understanding the state of mind of the citizens.

In Istanbul's Beyoğlu district, Semir T. and Ömer K. followed 25-year-old İrem A. as she was walking home, and after a while, they blocked her path and harassed the young woman. The individuals who attacked the woman, who was saved from a worse fate by the intervention of citizens in the area, were initially released and subsequently arrested.

In another incident in Istanbul's Fatih district, around 16:00, 19-year-old Semih Çelik, who was reported to be a butcher by trade, climbed the city walls in Edirnekapı with his girlfriend, 19-year-old İkbal Uzuner. After a while, Çelik attacked Uzuner with a knife, killed her, and dismembered her body. Çelik, who cut off her head and threw it down from the walls, then tied a rope around his own neck and jumped from the walls. It was revealed that half an hour before the incident, Çelik had also killed his alleged former girlfriend, Ayşenur Halil, by slitting her throat at her home in Eyüpsultan.

Reacting to this woman-centered brutality, Akşener included the following statements in her post:

Every detail of the events in Istanbul burns my heart separately...

Two young girls taken from us in the prime of their lives, what a grieving mother witnessed, and the fact that deranged monsters can walk our streets freely...

First and foremost, I pray for God's mercy upon our children and patience for their families and all their loved ones...

I also convey my best wishes to our young woman who was harassed by a creature that cannot be called human "just because she was walking on the street."

Undoubtedly, these grave events and the atrocities that target women at times and children at others, which we unfortunately hear about a new one every day, have sadly turned into a social trauma.

Moreover, in an environment where women are not sure of their safety, families are worried about their children's future, and painfully, there is still an unending suspicion today about whether the murderer of Özgecan, who was brutally murdered 10 years ago, escaped or not; we can neither stop these events nor overcome this trauma...

It is the duty of those who govern the Republic of Turkey to read the signs reflected in the state of mind of our nation, which lives under the current order, without needing words...
