Meriç Demir Kahraman's 'Engin Polat' commentary: 'Tayfun Kahraman did not launder money'

Meriç Demir Kahraman, wife of Gezi Park trial convict Tayfun Kahraman, made a statement following the release of Engin Polat and other defendants. Kahraman stated, "My husband Tayfun Kahraman did not launder money, did not facilitate illegal betting, did not purchase luxury villas and car collections with funds of unknown origin, did not play a leading role in MASAK reports, and did not violate the rights of others."

Meriç Demir Kahraman, the wife of Tayfun Kahraman, who was sentenced to 18 years in prison as part of the Gezi Park trial, made a statement following the release of Engin Polat and other defendants, who face up to 40 years in prison each for three separate charges.

In a statement posted on her social media account, Kahraman expressed that she met with Tayfun Kahraman today during their 40th open visitation at Silivri Prison.

REACTION FROM MERİÇ DEMİR KAHRAMAN

In her post, which included a photo of Tayfun Kahraman taken during his time as the Head of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Department of Earthquake Risk Management and Urban Improvement, Meriç Demir Kahraman drew attention to the release of Engin Polat and other defendants accused of 'laundering assets derived from crime' and 'violating the Law on the Regulation of Betting and Games of Chance'.

Stating that she would "not prolong it," Kahraman continued her remarks as follows:

"My husband Tayfun Kahraman did not launder money, did not facilitate illegal betting, did not purchase luxury villas and car collections with funds of unknown origin, did not play a leading role in MASAK reports, and did not violate the rights of others.

He lived with honor and integrity. He has been honest throughout his life. He fully complied with the Constitution and the laws, and he did whatever his duty required."

WHAT HAPPENED?

An interim decision was announced today in the trial of Dilan and Engin Polat, who are accused of 'establishing an organization for the purpose of committing crimes', 'laundering assets derived from crime', and 'violating the Law on the Regulation of Betting and Games of Chance'.

The court ordered the release of Engin Polat, Sezgin Polat, Alper Kürşat Polat, and accountant Ahmet Gün. The court ruled that judicial control measures, specifically a "travel ban," be applied to the released defendants.
