Following the refusal to recognize the rulings issued by the Constitutional Court regarding Can Atalay, his parliamentary membership was finally revoked after the decision was read in parliament.
While this decision was interpreted as trampling on justice, Atalay made a statement on his social media account.
Atalay's parliamentary membership was revoked today following the Constitutional Court's two rulings of rights violations, which the 3rd Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation refused to recognize for the second time.
Following this decision, Can Atalay issued a statement from Marmara Prison, where he is being held.
Here is that message from Can Atalay:
Citizens,
This happened too, they did this as well.
Despite the clear provisions of the Constitution that leave no room for doubt, they have "revoked" the parliamentary membership of the elected deputy for Hatay.
I am still surprised that lawlessness and the abandonment of rules have reached these dimensions. I am saddened on behalf of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey that it could be made a partner to this crime. I am worried for my country about the damage that this state of affairs, where it is unpredictable who will use which right or authority and where lawlessness reigns, will cause to the nation.
Turkey will not fit into this straitjacket of lawlessness and illegality. We will all see together…
So, just because they said "it's over," will I stop trying to do my duty?
Never!
I have a debt to my country, to the people of Hatay, and to the people who cast their votes in the middle of a destroyed city. Even if it is under difficult conditions and our resources are very limited, I will try to be the voice of our people and our citizens who live by their labor, especially in Hatay and the earthquake region.
The responsibility for my shortcomings lies with those who prevent my freedom. I believe that all my citizens, especially the people of Hatay, see the situation clearly.
Exactly one week from now is February 6. From tomorrow on, this is our main agenda.
There are those who do not want to be involved in the implementation, those who want to keep themselves out of it... There are those who present the implementation as a search... The Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, who is primarily responsible for protecting the rights of deputies, has gone abroad...
Even if they present it differently, look elsewhere, or go elsewhere, even if their signatures are not there, they will go down in history as those who were partners in the suspension of the Constitution.
I announce this to my fellow citizens with my respects...
Şerafettin Can Atalay
Elected Deputy for Hatay
