Metrobus accident in Sefaköy: 1 dead, 50 injured

The number of people detained in connection with the accident in Küçükçekmece, where two metrobuses collided, resulting in 1 death and 50 injuries—2 of them serious—has risen to 4. Meanwhile, the clearest footage of the tragic accident has been obtained.

The metrobus, heading towards Beylikdüzü, lost control in the Sefaköy area and collided with a metrobus coming from the opposite direction.

INVESTIGATION LAUNCHED

The Istanbul Governor's Office announced that an investigation has been launched into the incident. The statement from the Governor's Office included the following remarks:

"On Thursday, 29.08.2024, at 08:48, a collision between two metrobuses in the Küçükçekmece Sefaköy Marriage Office area resulted in 1 death and 38 injuries, 2 of which are serious. Immediately following the incident, numerous medical teams were dispatched to the area, and our injured citizens were transported to nearby hospitals. An investigation into the incident has been opened. We wish God's mercy upon our deceased citizen and a speedy recovery to our injured."

Meanwhile, it was reported that 2 drivers and 1 inspection supervisor were detained in connection with the accident.

NUMBER OF DETAINEES INCREASED

As part of the investigation, the drivers of the 2 metrobuses involved in the accident and 2 inspection supervisors on duty on the metrobus line were detained.

The processing of the 4 detained individuals at the police station is ongoing.

1 PERSON DIED, 50 INJURED, 2 SERIOUS

The Governor's Office later announced in a statement that the number of injured had risen to 50, and that 7 of them had been discharged after completing their treatment.

The statement from the Governor's Office shared the information: "In the metrobus accident that occurred in Küçükçekmece, 1 person has died as of now, and 50 people have been injured, 2 of them seriously. The treatment of the injured continues in the hospitals to which they were taken, and 7 people whose treatments were completed have been discharged."

Some time after the metrobuses were removed from the scene with the help of a tow truck, services resumed in both directions.

PRELIMINARY REPORT ON THE ACCIDENT

It was learned that metrobus driver D.M.Ç. and Ş.Y., who was on duty on the metrobus line, are suspects, while the other 2 individuals were only questioned as witnesses. A preliminary report on the accident was prepared by an expert.

The report stated that there was a warning regarding a turn due to the "White Road" (Beyaz Yol) work on the metrobus line, that the metrobus driver did not see this warning on the road, and that the accident occurred as a result of the driver missing the point where they were supposed to turn and attempting to make a sudden turn.

FUNERAL OF THE DECEASED YOUNG MAN TAKEN TO THE FORENSIC MEDICINE INSTITUTE

The family of 22-year-old Ferhat Uçar, who was seriously injured in the accident and lost his life despite all interventions at the hospital, arrived at Biruni University Hospital upon hearing the news.

Uçar's body was taken from there to the Forensic Medicine Institute for an autopsy.

In the footage, it is seen that the metrobus heading towards Beylikdüzü loses control after hitting the metrobus coming from the opposite direction from the side and comes to a stop after hitting the barriers in the right lane.

CONDOLENCES FROM İMAMOĞLU

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu stated in a post on his social media account, "I am deeply saddened by the loss of one of our fellow citizens in the metrobus accident in Küçükçekmece. I wish God's mercy upon our deceased citizen, offer my condolences to their relatives, and wish a speedy recovery to our injured citizens. The comprehensive investigation we have launched into the accident is ongoing."

STATEMENT FROM IETT REGARDING THE METROBUS ACCIDENT IN KÜÇÜKÇEKMECE

IETT, an Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) institution, reported that the accident in Küçükçekmece, which resulted in 1 death and 50 injuries, is assessed to have occurred due to the metrobus driver noticing the warning signs for the "White Road" work late and making a sudden reverse maneuver.

In the written statement made by IETT, it was recalled that 1 passenger lost their life in the traffic accident on the metrobus line, and the statement "Most of our injured passengers have been discharged from health institutions after receiving outpatient treatment. We do not have any passengers in life-threatening condition." was used.

Including the results of the initial investigation regarding the cause of the accident, the following was noted:

"According to initial investigations, the cause of the accident is assessed as the relevant metrobus driver noticing the IETT inspection vehicle (white passenger car) and other warning signs and cones, which show the road junction to drivers, late during the 'White Road' works being carried out to completely renew the metrobus line road, and making a sudden reverse maneuver."

The statement mentioned that all metrobus vehicles had passed through the same junction safely before the accident, and said, "The technical and administrative investigation regarding the accident is being carried out meticulously. Our IMM and IETT units are closely attending to our injured passengers. We wish God's mercy upon our deceased passenger, patience to their relatives, and a speedy recovery to the injured."
