It has emerged that the Silivri Municipality, the only MHP-run municipality in Istanbul, has made a decision that is set to spark controversy.
According to a report by İsmail Arı from BirGün; according to information in the Silivri Municipality 2022 Annual Activity Report, buildings located on four separate parcels in the Selimpaşa Neighborhood, which are owned by the municipality, were allocated to Nişantaşı University.
It was announced that the university would use the buildings, which were allocated on January 13, 2022, until January 12, 2032. However, the biography of MHP Mayor Volkan Yılmaz on the municipality's official website states that “Yılmaz is on the Board of Trustees of Nişantaşı University.” In other words, Yılmaz allocated buildings belonging to the municipality he manages to the university where he is a member of the Board of Trustees.
On the other hand, speaking at the Municipal Council meeting held in January 2022, MHP's Yılmaz stated regarding the allocation: “These are buildings that will be used for social responsibility, education, culture, and art projects to be carried out jointly by Nişantaşı University and Silivri Municipality. As Silivri Municipality, we had ambitions such as a music and art school, but we always had to postpone them due to pandemic conditions; hopefully, we will realize these together with Nişantaşı University.”
MUNICIPALITY PAYS THE RENT
Furthermore, it has also emerged that the AKP-run Gaziosmanpaşa Municipality in Istanbul has been paying the rent for the Turkey Youth Foundation (TÜGVA), where AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's son Bilal Erdoğan is an executive. The Gaziosmanpaşa Municipality's 2022 Annual Activity Report revealed that the municipality has been paying the rent for the TÜGVA Gaziosmanpaşa District Representative Office since 2017.
