Interior Minister Yerlikaya made statements at AFAD regarding the work carried out since the February 6 earthquakes.

Yerlikaya stated, "(In the February 6 earthquakes) which caused heavy destruction, we lost 53,537 of our lives, and 107,213 of our citizens were injured."

WHAT HAPPENED?

AKP's Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality mayoral candidate Murat Kurum had used the phrase, "130,000 of our lives were lost" during a television program he attended.

While Kurum's words were interpreted as a 'confession', AFAD President Yunus Sezer had announced in a statement on March 20, 2023, that the number of those who lost their lives in the February 6 earthquakes was 50,096.

AKP's IMM Mayoral Candidate Murat Kurum, in a statement on his social media account, had said, "In the February 6 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes, 50,000 of our lives were lost in 11 of our provinces. In the earthquakes throughout the history of the Republic, a total of 130,000 people lost their lives. Despite us saying this repeatedly in the same broadcast and in broadcasts months ago, it is truly sad that this has become a subject of political polemic today. They will see on March 31 when they lose that a true victory cannot be won with a political understanding that clings to lies."
