Minister of Interior Yerlikaya, in a post on his social media account X, stated, "It is unacceptable for UEFA to unfairly and biasedly impose a 2-match suspension on our national football player Merih Demiral.
UEFA has clearly deemed it appropriate to apply a suspension to our national player for every goal he scored against Austria. I condemn this decision.
And I believe that this double-standard decision, which is far from justice and does not fit the spirit of football, will only unite 'Our Boys' even more. We have had the same sentence on our lips since the first day. May the end of the road be the final," he said.
WHAT HAPPENED?
In the EURO 2024 European Football Championship quarter-final match, our National Football Team faced Austria.
The crescent-star team reached a 2-1 victory in the match with goals from Merih Demiral. Merih Demiral, who scored the goals that brought victory to Turkey, celebrated his goals with a 'grey wolf' salute.
While UEFA launched an investigation into this celebration by Demiral, the German newspaper Bild announced last night that Demiral would be given a 2-match suspension.
The TFF had denied Bild's report.
