The incident occurred around 13:15 at the popular Saturday market in Bakırköy.

According to allegations, a person was caught stealing at the market.

Upon being caught, the suspect, who was trying to escape, shouted "there is a bomb," causing chaos. Following the suspect's shouts, those who had come to the market for holiday shopping began to flee.

On the other hand, it was learned that those trying to escape caused congestion at the metro stations.

SUSPECTS APPREHENDED

The processing of the theft suspect, who was apprehended by police teams, continues at the police station.

The following statement was made by the Istanbul Governor's Office regarding the matter:

"As a result of the investigation into the incident that occurred on 06.04.2024 at the local market in our Bakırköy district, which was shared on social media platforms as a 'bomb panic at the public market,' it has been determined that the incident occurred after a suspect caught stealing at the market shouted 'there is a bomb in the market.'

Following the short-lived panic, it was understood that the report was baseless, and the situation at the local market returned to normal. The processing of the theft suspect, who was apprehended by our police teams, continues at the police station."
