The most indebted municipalities have been revealed: AKP-run Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality keeps the top spot

According to data from the Ministry of Treasury and Finance, 17 of the 30 local administrations with debts to the Treasury are municipalities under AKP or trustee management.

The total debt of these 30 local administrations to the Treasury has reached 10 billion 624 million 825 thousand TL. It was reported that 8.8 million TL of the total 10.6 billion TL Treasury debt of local governments consists of overdue debts.

According to a report by Mustafa Bildircin from Birgün; the prevalence of municipalities under AKP and trustee management on the list of local administrations with Treasury debts is noteworthy. According to data updated by the Ministry of Treasury and Finance on March 1, 2024, institutions managed by AKP mayors or trustees accounted for 6 billion 674 million 221 thousand TL of the total Treasury debt of the 30 local administrations.

The Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality, under the administration of AKP's Tahir Büyükakın, did not relinquish the title of "most indebted municipality" during the January-March period of 2024. The municipality became the most indebted AKP-run municipality with 2 billion 60 million 896 thousand TL. Following Kocaeli was the AKP-run Samsun Metropolitan Municipality with a debt of 1 billion 66 million 33 thousand TL. The Treasury debt of the Samsun Water and Sewerage Administration was recorded as 415 million 660 thousand TL.
