Mother of suspect who killed police officer in Ümraniye speaks out: 'I wish I had died instead of that officer'

The incident occurred on September 22, 2024, around 11:00 PM on Petrol Yolu Street in the Ihlamurkuyu neighborhood of Ümraniye. Yunus Emre Geçti (19), who had a record of 26 various crimes, seized a police officer's weapon while being taken into custody by police teams and opened fire on the officers and the surrounding area. 

Police officer Şeyda Yılmaz (27), who was critically wounded in the ensuing shootout when officers returned fire, was taken to the hospital but could not be saved despite all interventions and was martyred. The murder suspect, who was taken into custody following the incident, was arrested and sent to prison.

Pınar Geçti, the mother of the suspect involved in the incident, stated the following:

"Would any mother or father want their child to be in that state? Look, I am wounded too. I have a daughter. I am looking after her. May God have mercy on her soul. My heart is broken. I truly wish I had died before our police officer did. I wish I had taken those bullets. I wish I had been the one hit by the bullets. But let me say this. If there is anything I can do, let them come. On Twitter, on social media, they ask, 'what kind of mother, what kind of father are you'. For the love of God, I am calling out to my state, would I want my child to be this bad? I am a mother, I am a father.

'IF MY CHILD HAD A RECORD OF 26 CRIMES, WHY DID THE STATE NOT TAKE HIM?'

I was wounded. Go and tell everyone this. If my child had a record of 26 crimes, why did the state not take him? Why did the state not remove him? Why was he walking around freely until yesterday? I begged the state so much. I went to the police stations so many times. I said everything. This child is a substance addict, this child sells substances, this child uses substances. I said all of these. I said all of these. I was the one who told them where my child was again. I was the one who told them where my child was and had them find him. But, no mother or father would want this. Would any mother or father want their child to grow up to martyr our police officer? Am I a monster? I am truly very sorry"

Offering her condolences to the family of the martyr, Pınar Geçti said, "May God give patience to her family. I am thinking of going to visit her family if necessary. I wish it had hit me instead of our police officer, I wish I had died. I wish it had hit me in the head. Look, I was wounded in both my heel and my leg".
