Motion on Narin Güran murder rejected in Turkish Parliament: With AKP and MHP votes

The Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) convened under the chairmanship of Deputy Speaker Bekir Bozdağ to discuss the 'Teaching Profession Law' proposal. The DEM Party submitted a research motion to the Speaker's Office titled 'Investigation of the Narin Güran Murder in All Its Aspects.'

Speaking on behalf of her party regarding the motion, Diyarbakır MP Ceylan Akça Cupolo stated, "Before Narin went missing, her murder was planned even before she fell victim to it. Because her sister's murder was not investigated, Narin was slaughtered, and after Narin was slaughtered and went missing, the electricity in that village was cut off, and in that darkness, it remained unclear who protected which perpetrator and how.

When Narin's funeral was held, everyone came and took photos at the graveside, but no one held any meetings to ask, 'What are the women and children in that village, who are trying to suffocate under the oath of silence imposed by that patriarchal mindset, doing? Are they afraid? Are they startled? Do they need support?' The minister who is here in this parliament today went to that village but did not meet with either the women or the children of that village. Pepper spray was used, water cannons were fired, and warnings were issued against people who marched in the city for Narin. What kind of logic could there be in using pepper spray against a crowd marching for the clarification of a child's murder?"

"WE HAVE A PROBLEM OF POLITICAL ETHICS"

Speaking on behalf of the Saadet Party Group regarding the motion, Istanbul MP Mustafa Kaya stated that the problem of morality and justice in society must be identified, saying, "Morality is not just something that describes the relationship between men and women; we have a public morality problem, we have a political morality problem, we have a commercial morality problem. Ultimately, the reflection of all these problems causes us to face such cases. Either we will all decide together where the problem starts and how we should fight it, or unfortunately, we will continue to make these kinds of speeches after the Narins, after the Leylas," he said.

"WHY WASN'T EVERYONE TREATED AS A SUSPECT?"

Speaking on behalf of the CHP Group, Muğla MP Gizem Özcan described what happened during the investigation process, saying, "In the first week of the investigation, the uncle, who was arrested as a murder suspect, was not prevented from playing an active role in the search efforts and engaging in misleading actions. Why did the law enforcement officers not see everyone there as a suspect and treat them accordingly? Was there any political influence here? Did the armor of being a 'respectable family' protect the family? Was it determined whether the family received an opinion from a forensic expert suggested to them? While the first thought was burying the body, the fact that the child was submerged in water in that way and stones were placed on top to destroy evidence is an important detail; were these followed up on? Although 41 days have passed in the murder investigation, statement-taking and evidence-collection processes are still ongoing. Most recently, a forensic examination was conducted on the carpet in Narin's house, and it was seized. Why was there such a delay? For us, asking these questions is a debt we owe to our children, to our Narin. We will continue to make our pain and anger the fire of our struggle for justice for Narin, for our children," she said.

"THERE ARE MANY QUESTIONS"

Sharing data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) regarding children, İYİ Party Group Deputy Chairman Turhan Çömez said, "There are many questions, and I want each of these questions to be put on the record. She was found at a distance of 1.5 kilometers and was found submerged in water. There was camera footage of those who carried the body, that is, the red vehicle that carried the sack. For exactly 19 days, this camera footage was not shared, and it was not followed up on. Why? This must be accounted for. Again, the vehicle in which Narin's lifeless body was carried was first taken; small samples were taken, thinking it contained some information and documents, and it was given back to the family. We have doctor friends among us who will know what this means; it is a terrible mistake, an incredible mistake in terms of forensic medicine. In my opinion, this is not a mistake but negligence and even betrayal; this should never have happened," he assessed.

"WHATEVER IS NECESSARY WILL BE DONE"

Speaking on behalf of the AKP Group regarding the motion, Istanbul MP Cüneyt Yüksel noted that his party would do everything to ensure that the people who murdered Narin Güran receive the punishment they deserve, stating, "Whatever is necessary will be done within the framework of the law and before justice. At the same time, we will never allow those who want to turn this incident into a tool for polarization with rhetoric that does not reflect the truth from the very first moment of the event. We also request our citizens not to rely on information other than the statements of our official authorities. This matter is not a matter to be politicized. We will continue our determined fight against all criminals, whether they are separatist terrorists, drug dealers, or gangs, or the morally bankrupt people around them, who extinguish the sparkle in the eyes of not only our daughter Narin but all our children. Any act of attack against women and children is a crime against humanity in our view," he said.

MOTION REJECTED

Following Yüksel's statements, Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Bekir Bozdağ put the motion to a vote in the General Assembly. The motion was rejected by the votes of AKP and MHP MPs.

Speaking after the rejection of the motion, DEM Party Group Deputy Chairwoman Meral Danış Beştaş said, "The Narin Güran murder unfortunately continues to be on Turkey's agenda. However, the speaker who spoke last on behalf of the ruling party stated the confidentiality of the investigation and that the judiciary would do what is necessary as the reason for voting against the motion, and shared this with the public. I would like to state that the Diyarbakır Bar Association, of which I am also a member, has declared countless times that the confidentiality of the investigation was violated from beginning to end by those conducting the investigation themselves. In other words, those who voted 'No' to this motion today are those who do not want the Narin Güran murder to be uncovered, those who want it to remain in the dark," she said.
