Sources from the Ministry of National Defense (MSB) have provided comprehensive statements regarding Turkey's security policies and recent developments in the region. At the center of the statement were emphases on Syria's territorial integrity and clear messages regarding demands for autonomy.
'SYRIA'S INTEGRITY IS OUR PRIMARY PRIORITY'
MSB sources stated that developments in Syria are being closely monitored by Turkey, noting, "Syria's territorial integrity and political unity are a primary priority for Turkey." In this context, it was expressed that demands for autonomy or initiatives directed toward this could harm not only Syria's sovereignty but also regional stability.
'WE WILL NOT CONSENT UNDER ANY GUISE'
The Ministry's statement said, "The fragmentation of Syria's territorial integrity and the disruption of its unitary structure, under any name or guise, cannot be consented to. This stance of ours is of vital importance both for the security of the region and for Turkey's national interests." The statement further added, "Just as the new Syrian administration is opposed to any rhetoric and activity regarding an autonomous region or decentralization, we are also opposed to them."
The statement also addressed the ongoing discussions regarding the Tishrin Dam. While it was stated that issues regarding the transfer of the dam are being conducted in coordination with the Syrian Interim Government's Ministry of Defense and relevant regional actors, it was noted, "Syria's natural resources and assets belong only to the Syrians. The process regarding the dam is being closely monitored."
