Murat Yetkin's 50+1 commentary: Does the MHP need the AKP?

In an article for YetkinReport regarding the 50+1 issue that Erdoğan brought to the agenda upon his return from Germany, Murat Yetkin stated that the perception and narrative that the MHP is dependent on the AKP to enter Parliament have been rendered invalid.

Yetkin also said the following:

“First, the 50+1 system, which was justified as the end of coalition eras, has instead led to an alliance system where negotiations are laid bare to such an extent that one would long for the days of coalitions.”

“Second, the electoral threshold was lowered from 10 percent to 7 percent. This situation invalidated the perception and narrative that the MHP is dependent on the AK Party to enter Parliament. However, the argument that the MHP has gained positions in the judiciary, administration, and security bureaucracy through the People's Alliance, and that it has negatively affected the AK Party's potential among Kurdish voters, still holds true.”

“Third is the assumption that Erdoğan would not want to alienate Bahçeli, who is the branch he relies on most when seeking constitutional amendments. This raises the question of whether Erdoğan is preparing for a sharper turn by bringing up the 50+1 issue in this manner.”
