Naci Görür calls on the government and local administrations on the anniversary of August 17: Otherwise, we as a nation will be very sorry

Earthquake scientist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür has called for cooperation from the government and local administrations on the 25th anniversary of the August 17 Marmara Earthquake.

Sharing on his X account, Görür stated, "25 years have passed, but we are still talking. Istanbul is not ready for an earthquake. What has been done to date is a mere fraction of what needs to be done."

Stating that "it is essential for the public to fulfill its function of inspection and oversight," Görür's statement is as follows:

"After the August 17, 1999 Gölcük Earthquake, the scientific community sounded the alarm for the Marmara Region and stated that the region in general, and Istanbul in particular, needed to be prepared for an earthquake. 25 years have passed, but we are still talking. Istanbul is not ready for an earthquake. What has been done to date is a mere fraction of what needs to be done.

For Istanbul to be prepared for an earthquake, it is essential for the government, local administration, and the people of Istanbul to join hands, help each other, and work together. It is essential for the government and local administration to show a determined will, and for the public to fulfill its function of inspection and oversight. Otherwise, it means we as a nation will be very sorry. Do not ever forget the February 6 earthquakes, regards."
