Naci Görür speaks to 12punto: What is the significance of the 5.2 and 4.2 magnitude earthquakes on the Hatay border?

Earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Naci Görür made important statements to 12punto regarding the earthquake centered in Syria that was also felt in our province of Hatay. 

Naci Görür stated that it is difficult to make a definitive assessment regarding this earthquake yet, noting that the earthquake is related to the Dead Sea fault line. 

THE FAULT LINE IN OUR COUNTRY HAS LARGELY RUPTURED

Prof. Dr. Naci Görür emphasized that the earthquake took place on the Dead Sea Fault and that this fault line, between Maraş and Hatay, is independent of the East Anatolian Fault Line, stating the following:

"While the East Anatolian Fault Line extends from Maraş towards Adana, this earthquake occurred between Maraş and Hatay, that is, on the Dead Sea Fault. This fault line starts from the region where the earthquake occurred and extends all the way to the Red Sea. We are talking about a left-lateral fault, and it is a quite large fault line. The portion of this fault within Turkey has largely ruptured. As we have stated before, this fault line will continue to rupture towards the Red Sea over time."

'I DO NOT EXPECT SERIOUS DESTRUCTION'

Naci Görür expressed his belief that these types of earthquakes would not have a direct impact due to the rupture of the Dead Sea fault line in Turkey, saying, "If a very large earthquake occurs right under our noses, we will also shake. However, I do not expect serious destruction, except for very fragile buildings. I do not think there will be a disaster-level impact."
