Prof. Dr. Naci Görür, who issued warnings regarding a possible major Marmara earthquake, stated that an earthquake will definitely occur in the Marmara region, saying, "Only the part that broke in the 1912 Şarköy earthquake will not be affected. If the other part breaks, there will be an earthquake reaching a magnitude of 7.5. That is certain, but we do not know the timing. That is why we are shouting: Prepare Istanbul for an earthquake."

A panel titled "Earthquake and Urban Transformation in Istanbul" was organized by the Istanbul Contractors and Business People Association (İMİDER) at the Eyüpsultan Culture and Art Center. Earth scientist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür also attended the panel.
Speaking at the panel, Prof. Dr. Görür stated that a life cycle occurs on Earth thanks to earthquakes, noting that there are no earthquakes on dead planets and celestial bodies outside our world. Noting that earthquakes will continue to occur at plate boundaries in Turkey, Görür asked people to demand that those aspiring to govern them make cities resilient against earthquakes.

Pointing to the importance of earthquake-resilient settlement areas, Görür said, "When and how the earthquake happens is not our concern. Discussing the faults is also not our concern. Let universities and scientists discuss these. What we emphasize is that a major earthquake can happen anywhere in this country at any time, and tens of thousands of our people could die. Let's make our cities resilient to earthquakes so that they do not die. This is not that difficult; there are examples of this being done in the world." Emphasizing micro-zonation studies, Görür highlighted that topography and geological studies are important for identifying risky areas before an earthquake.
EARTHQUAKE WARNING OF 7.5 MAGNITUDE FROM NACI GÖRÜR
Describing the earthquakes that occurred in Istanbul on May 22 and August 5, 1766, Görür said, "This fault system produces an earthquake every 250 years. Energy accumulates over 250 years and is released with an earthquake. Then it happens again. When you add 250 years to 1766, it makes 2016. That is why we are shouting, 'Prepare Istanbul for an earthquake, pay attention to the Marmara Region.' After the 1999 earthquake, we conducted studies on the earthquake in Marmara and saw that an earthquake will definitely occur in Marmara. Only the part that broke in the 1912 Şarköy earthquake will not be affected. If the other part breaks, there will be an earthquake reaching a magnitude of 7.5.
