Naci Görür warns: This region will sooner or later be tested by an earthquake

Istanbul Technical University faculty member and earth scientist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür stated that Manisa is built on active fault lines, noting that these active faults have the potential to produce earthquakes of magnitude 7 or greater, and therefore the city's earthquake resilience must be increased.
Attending the "Is Manisa Ready for an Earthquake?" panel organized by the Manisa Young Business People Association (MAGİAD) at the Manisa Culture Center Lale Hall, Görür pointed out that the fault lines in Manisa spread toward the edges of mountains, slopes, and into the plains, stating that the city possesses horst and graben land characteristics.
Pointing out that Manisa is built on a subsidence area defined as a "graben," Görür said, "Manisa is built on active fault lines. These active faults have the potential to produce earthquakes of magnitude 7 or greater. You are living within a tectonic structure, and earthquakes will inevitably occur in this tectonic structure. If not today, then tomorrow; if not tomorrow, then the day after. Therefore, there is no point in us asking: Will there be an earthquake here? When will it happen? How will it happen? This region will sooner or later be tested by an earthquake."
"TAKE OWNERSHIP OF YOUR PROPERTY"
Görür indicated that lessons should be learned from history and that earthquakes should be taken seriously, saying, "The property owners of Manisa, the people living here, you are the owners of this place.
Use your own will and take ownership of your property. Never get involved in politics. But whoever comes, make our Manisa a resilient city. Can Manisa be made earthquake-resilient? Of course it can. If Manisa becomes an earthquake-resilient city, it will be minimally affected by a major earthquake."
Emphasizing that earthquakes cannot be prevented but their effects can be reduced, Görür said, "Earthquakes are the pulse of the world. If there were no earthquakes, the world would die.
Earthquakes show that the world is alive. But if we sit in the lap of an earthquake and do not take the necessary precautions, it will kill us. It is that simple. For a resilient Manisa, for resilient cities, we must know the region very well. We must know its topography, we must know its geology and soil."
