Former Interior Minister and AKP Istanbul Deputy recently submitted a petition to the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) requesting the removal of his legislative immunity.
Arguing that "it has become necessary to fight against the smears and slanders against him on legal grounds," Soylu requested that his immunity be lifted.
According to the report in Gazete Duvar, Soylu's immunity can only be lifted if it is accepted in the General Assembly. However, it has been learned that the Speaker of Parliament and the AKP have no such agenda.
It has been learned that in ruling party corridors, the following is being said regarding Soylu's application: "Süleyman Soylu submitted a petition for his immunity to be lifted, but there is no summary of proceedings (fezleke) against him in Parliament. Therefore, there is no situation that requires any action. With this application, Soylu is saying, 'You are making a lot of allegations against me. The prosecutor's office is there. Whatever information or documents you have, apply there and let it be the subject of an investigation. Let a summary of proceedings come. I am already submitting a petition as a deputy for my immunity to be lifted.' If a summary of proceedings arrives, this application could be evaluated."
