New development in the investigation into the death of Rojin Kabaiş: Request accepted

A new development has occurred in the investigation into the suspicious death of Rojin Kabaiş. It has been stated that Turkey's international letter rogatory request for the examination of her mobile phone, which is of critical importance, has been accepted by Spanish authorities. It was reported that the device will be sent to Spain shortly, accompanied by two officials from Turkey, in order to gain access to the digital data on Kabaiş's mobile phone.

A first-year student in the Child Development Department at the YYU Faculty of Education, Rojin Kabaişwent missing after leaving her dormitory on September 27, 2023. Kabaiş'slifeless body was found on October 15 on the shore of Mollakasım neighborhood, along the coast of Lake Van.

Within the scope of the investigation, the report from the Forensic Medicine Institute's Biological Specialization Department, which was added to the file on October 10, stated that DNA belonging to two different men was detected in the chest and internal vaginal area of Kabaiş.

A comprehensive DNA screening was conducted on individuals who may have come into contact with the body during the transfer process from the scene to the Forensic Medicine Institute's Van Group Presidency Morgue Specialization Department. While the DNA profiles of 134 people were compared in the first stage, this number has recently risen to 195. It was stated that DNA samples were also taken from university and dormitory security guards, and that the number of profiles to be compared may increase.

THE SPANISHMINISTER OF JUSTICE IS MONITORING THE CASE

Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç announced that during his recent meeting with the Spanish Minister of Justice, he emphasized that the investigation conducted by the Van Chief Public Prosecutor's Office is being carried out with great diligence, and that unlocking the mobile phone belonging to Kabaiş is of critical importance for the investigation, and therefore he requested support from the Spanish authorities. Spanish Minister of Justice Garciastated that they are closely following the Rojin Kabaiş case, that they have forwarded the Turkish authorities' request for judicial assistance to the prosecutor's office and police units, and that the digital data will be obtained by the police, with the Minister of the Interior also being informed about the process. Garciastated that instructions had been given to conclude the necessary procedures as soon as possible.

EXAMINATION COULD CHANGE THE COURSE OF THE INVESTIGATION

It was stated that as a result of the initiatives of Minister of Justice Tunç, the international letter rogatory request was accepted by the Spanish authorities. It was reported that the device will be sent to Spain with two officials from Turkey to gain access to the digital data on Kabaiş's mobile phone, and that the phone will be subjected to a forensic examination there. The data obtained after the completion of the digital examination, which could affect the course of the investigation, is expected to be delivered to Turkey.
