New development regarding Rümeysa Öztürk, who was detained in the US

Lawyers for Rümeysa Öztürk, who was detained in the US, have requested that their client's transfer to Vermont not be delayed.

In a written statement issued by Öztürk's lawyers, it was stated that an appeal would be filed with the appellate court to ensure that Rümeysa Öztürk's transfer to Vermont is not delayed.

The statement emphasized that the detention conditions in Louisiana pose a serious threat to Öztürk's health, noting that Öztürk, who is being held in a crowded and poorly ventilated room with 23 other women, frequently suffers from asthma attacks that are becoming increasingly severe.

The statement reported that Öztürk's asthma attacks, which previously lasted between 5 and 15 minutes, can now last up to 45 minutes.

The statement argued that Öztürk has been held in detention for approximately 6 weeks under conditions that are both unlawful and a risk to her health, stating that the Turkish student has been exposed to insect and rodent droppings, has almost no access to fresh air, has faced delays in medical intervention, and that medical staff have been indifferent.

A federal judge in Massachusetts ruled that Öztürk's legal battle should continue in Vermont rather than Louisiana, and another judge in Vermont ordered Öztürk's transfer to a facility in Vermont by May 1; however, the US government appealed this decision on April 24.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Turkish student Rümeysa Öztürk, who is pursuing a doctorate at Tufts University in Massachusetts, was detained on the evening of March 25 by 6 masked Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers while on her way to have iftar with her friends.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had announced that Öztürk's student visa had been revoked and that she would be deported.

Rubio stated that the visas of more than 300 foreign students, whom he described as "Hamas supporters" and (anti-Israel) "lunatics," had been revoked.

US federal judge Denise Casper had issued a stay of deportation for the Turkish student Öztürk, who was detained by ICE officers.

Tufts University, where Rümeysa Öztürk is pursuing her doctorate, also demanded the release of its student, with President Sunil Kumar stating in a court filing that Öztürk's arrest had "paralyzed the school's international community" and that they were now concerned about the safety of the school.
