The Ministry of Interior has announced that AKP's Yahşihan Mayor in Kırıkkale, Ahmet Sungur, has been removed from office following his arrest.

The statement included the following: "In accordance with Article 127 of the Constitution and Article 47 of the Municipal Law No. 5395, he has been suspended from duty by the Ministry of Interior as a temporary measure."

WHAT HAPPENED?

The Kırıkkale Chief Public Prosecutor's Office had launched an investigation into the Yahşihan Municipality over allegations of "extortion through coercion."

Within the scope of the investigation, AKP's Yahşihan Mayor Ahmet Sungur, Deputy Mayor C.Y., former Deputy Mayor O.U., Zoning Manager S.A., municipal employees Y.N.Y. and M.S., the former zoning manager, and businesspeople U.B. and S.G.Ç. were detained.

In addition to Mayor Sungur, Deputy Mayor C.Y., former Deputy Mayor O.U., Zoning Manager S.A., the former zoning manager, and businessman U.B. were arrested by the court they were brought before.

While judicial control measures were applied to suspect Y.N.Y., M.S. and S.G.Ç. were released following their questioning by the prosecutor's office.

DISCIPLINARY PROCESS FROM THE AKP

The AKP Central Executive Board had decided to refer Mayor Ahmet Sungur to the Central Disciplinary Board with a request for his permanent expulsion.

WHO IS AHMET SUNGUR?

Born in Kırıkkale in 1971, Ahmet Sungur is a graduate of the Industrial Automation Department of the Kırıkkale Vocational School.

Starting his career as a civil servant at the Yahşihan Municipality in 1989, Sungur later worked as an electrical technician at the Village Services Directorate.

Elected as the Mayor of Yahşihan from the AK Party in the 2009, 2014, and 2024 local elections, Sungur most recently returned to the office of mayor in the 2024 elections by receiving 41.58% of the votes.
