It has emerged that Cemil Önal, the former accountant of Halil Falyalı, who was killed in Northern Cyprus in 2022, had reported receiving threats against his life to the Dutch public prosecutor's office several times before he was killed. Önal was concerned that these threats might originate from Turkey.
According to reports by Sözcü, David Davidson from the Netherlands-based investigative journalism platform Follow The Money shared the details of his meeting with Önal. Davidson stated that he met with Önal at a restaurant in The Hague and that Önal told him he possessed documents regarding bribery practices. Önal had expressed that these documents could put him in danger.
Cemil Önal's lawyer stated that his client had repeatedly notified the prosecutor's office about the danger of being killed. However, the Dutch prosecutor's office has not yet made a statement regarding the matter.
In an interview he gave to the newspaper Bugün Kıbrıs shortly before his death, Önal had mentioned the possibility of being killed, saying, "I am a black box; they will want to silence me."
