New director of Kandilli Observatory announced
Prof. Dr. Nurcan Meral Özel has been appointed as the Director of the Kandilli Observatory

According to the statement made by Boğaziçi University, Özel, whose appointment has been finalized, completed her doctorate in seismology at Hokkaido University in Japan between 1991 and 1996.
Prof. Dr. Özel has led numerous international projects throughout her academic and administrative career and played a role in the development of earthquake research infrastructure and technology transfer in Turkey.
Having taken on roles in creating platforms for joint scientific and operational studies between Japan and Turkey, particularly in the field of earth sciences, Özel has mentored more than 20 master's and doctoral students in geophysics and has authored over 100 international publications.
A 'TECHNOLOGICAL' APPROACH TO NATURAL PHENOMENA
Prof. Dr. Nurcan Meral Özel also spearheaded the establishment of the "KRDAE National Tsunami Warning Center," which provides regional tsunami warning services for the Eastern Mediterranean, the Aegean, and the Black Sea in Turkey under the umbrella of the "UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission."
Selected for duty by 184 states within the "United Nations (UN) Nuclear Weapons Ban" organization, Özel managed the International Monitoring Network, which includes 4 separate high-tech systems deployed in 98 countries, for 8 years.
Taking on administrative responsibilities alongside multidimensional scientific and technological projects in various parts of the world has increased Özel's expertise and recognition in monitoring natural phenomena using high technologies.
RECEIVED STATE DECORATION IN JAPAN
Having signed off on efforts to improve and develop the global monitoring system technologically and scientifically throughout her tenure, Özel was named among the "Six Women Leaders Who Left Their Mark on Technology on the International Platform" in 2017.
Prof. Dr. Nurcan Meral Özel was awarded a Japanese state decoration this year.
Prof. Dr. Haluk Özener, whose term has concluded, had been serving as the Director of the Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute for 9 years.
