New footage emerges in the Aynur Kanbur murder case: Killed 10 years ago

In the investigation into the murder of Aynur Kanbur, who was killed 10 years ago in Şişli, 4,000 hours of security camera footage reviewed by police teams have revealed the suspect scouting the area around Kanbur's home and fleeing the scene after the murder.

The incident occurred on March 24, 2016, at approximately 20:00 on Narçiçeği Street in the Fulya neighborhood of Şişli. 49-year-old Aynur Kanbur, a member of the dance group "Mezdeke," was killed by a male suspect who fired multiple shots at her in front of the entrance to her apartment building. Despite the time that has passed, the empty shell casings found at the scene could not be matched to any other incident or weapon.

In 2017, following a petition filed by Aynur Kanbur's sister, an investigation was launched by teams into her relatives Fazlı K., Serdar K., and Yüksel K. HTS records were reviewed retroactively following allegations that the suspects had previously threatened Aynur Kanbur by saying, "No belly dancer comes from our family."

After the establishment of the Department for Investigating Unsolved Crimes within the Ministry of Justice, the Aynur Kanbur file was reopened. The Istanbul Police Department's Homicide Bureau launched a new investigation into the case.

New details have emerged regarding the investigation conducted by the Homicide Bureau. It was learned that the police formed a special team to locate the suspect and subsequently obtained footage of him captured by a security camera in Mecidiyeköy. The police, who determined the profile of the attacker—who was wearing a hat—worked for months to identify where he boarded the Metrobus. It was learned that a 6-person special team within the Homicide Bureau was assigned exclusively to this task and reviewed 4,000 hours of security camera footage.

An important detail regarding the incident emerged through the slow-motion review of the security camera footage. Homicide detectives determined that the suspect, who was wearing a hat, had traveled from the Avcılar Metrobus Station toward Mecidiyeköy. Consequently, the police began examining all male individuals who boarded the Metrobus from that station. 1,700 people in the 16-50 age group were examined one by one through AKBİL records. As a result of these efforts, they reached Bülent G., who was determined to be a relative of the murdered Aynur Kanbur. It was established that the suspect's movements matched the killer's profile.

The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office issued arrest warrants for Bülent G., who is believed to have committed the murder, as well as Fazlı K. and Serdar K. on charges of inciting the crime. As a result of a simultaneous operation conducted by the Public Security Branch teams, the 3 suspects were apprehended and taken into custody.

In his initial statement at the police station, Bülent G., one of the suspects taken into custody, confessed to committing the murder. It was stated that in his statement taken in the presence of his lawyer, Bülent G. also admitted to killing Aynur Kanbur and recounted the event in full detail. It was learned that the suspect said, "She was our relative. People have been making fun of us for years because she was a belly dancer. Finally, I couldn't take it anymore and decided to kill her."

Explaining that he took his gun and boarded the Metrobus from Avcılar on the day of the incident, Bülent G. reportedly said, "I walked to the front of her house. I waited for a while. After throwing the gun into the sea there, I returned to my home."

It was revealed that the suspect Bülent G., who explained that he was a relative of the victim Aynur Kanbur and that he had thrown the weapon used in the murder into the sea, had prior records for "assault" and "illegal possession of a weapon."

Security camera footage emerges

In the security camera footage that emerged regarding the incident, the suspect is seen getting off the Metrobus in Mecidiyeköy and then walking toward the home of Aynur Kanbur, where he would carry out the armed attack. It was determined that the suspect, who fled the scene on foot after the attack, was also captured by security cameras while heading toward Beşiktaş.
