MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli visited the Special Operations Headquarters, which was bombed during the July 15, 2016 coup attempt and where 51 police officers were martyred.

Special Operations Chief Süleyman Karadeniz kissed Bahçeli's hand during the welcome.

The footage, which became a major topic of discussion, drew widespread reaction. CHP Deputy Chairman responsible for the Ministry of Interior, Murat Bakan, stated in a post on his social media account, "This police chief must be retired immediately."

"PERHAPS THIS IS A SHARP MESSAGE"

12punto.com.tr Editor-in-Chief Mustafa Büyüksipahi evaluated the footage that dominated the public agenda in his article titled "The hand-kissing special operations officer and the AKP's new media plans".

"Under the MHP-AKP government, we are pushed from one state of astonishment to another every day at the highest level, with the most unimaginable events, the most mind-boggling corruption actions, and political profile actions and behaviors that repeatedly make us question the existence of human dignity," said Büyüksipahi, adding the following in his article:

"Everyone knows who is close to the MHP in Turkey. However, these strange events are developing within a framework of an approach that people perhaps do not know, or perhaps they do know and are building another strategy. Perhaps this is a sharp message."
