New president of the Union of Municipalities of Türkiye announced

Adana Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Zeydan Karalar has been elected as the new president of the Union of Municipalities of Türkiye (TBB) following the arrest of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Mayor and TBB President Ekrem İmamoğlu.

CHP's Adana Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Zeydan Karalar has been appointed as the new president of the TBB following the arrest of İmamoğlu. It was noted that Karalar will serve as TBB president until the opposition's roadmap is determined.

İmamoğlu has faced various rulings within the scope of ongoing investigations. While İmamoğlu was released from terror-related charges, he was arrested due to a corruption investigation.

İmamoğlu, who was transferred to the Marmara Closed Prison in Silivri, has been suspended from his mayoral duties in accordance with a decision taken by the Ministry of Interior.

ZEYDAN KARALAR TO SERVE AS ACTING PRESIDENT

Following the arrest of Ekrem İmamoğlu, Zeydan Karalar will assume the presidency of the Union of Municipalities of Türkiye (TBB). Karalar will carry out this duty as acting president in place of İmamoğlu.

While no official statement has been made regarding the process, it is not yet clear how long İmamoğlu's detention will last.

WHO IS ZEYDAN KARALAR?

Karalar is a Turkish engineer and politician born in 1958 in the Seyhan district of Adana. Karalar graduated from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Çukurova University in 1980.

Starting his political career in the Republican People's Party (CHP), Karalar was appointed as the CHP Adana Provincial Chair in 2010. Karalar was re-elected to this position in 2011. Elected as the Mayor of Seyhan in the 2014 local elections, Karalar became the Mayor of Adana Metropolitan Municipality in 2019. Karalar continued his duty by being re-elected as mayor in Adana in the 2023 elections.
