Interim decision opinion announced in the 'newborn gang' trial: 10 defendants ordered to be arrested

Eleven days have passed in the trial of the defendants known in the public eye as the "newborn gang," who are being tried on charges of causing infant deaths in private hospitals and generating illicit profits.

In the trial held at the Istanbul Bakırköy 22nd High Criminal Court, the defenses of a total of 47 defendants, 22 of whom are in custody, and their lawyers have been heard since the hearings began on November 18.

In today's session of the newborn gang trial, the testimonies of the complainants are expected to begin. The accounts of the complainants are considered a significant turning point in the trial process.

During the hearing, one of the victims' lawyers stated, "How many years has the defendant Fırat Sarı been doing this, how many years has he been killing people? The nurses need to speak under the scope of effective remorse. There is no tape recording in the expert report. We are legally pursuing the matter regarding the other children as well. We are on their heels regarding the causal link. There are 19 children in the report. However, 6 of the 19 children are missing from the file. Is there a decision of non-prosecution regarding these 6 children?" While the requests of the Union of Turkish Bar Associations and other bar associations, political parties, and associations to participate in the court were rejected, the defense of the nurse defendant Hakan Doğukan Taşçı was heard on the first day of the hearing. Taşçı said, "Alterations on documents were always done to get more money. It was also done in the hospitals where I worked 10 years ago. These institutions are inspected 6-7 times a year. How is it that they come out of the inspections without any problems and the crime is left to us? If you show the patient as intubated, the patient becomes '3rd level.' You get more money from the Social Security Institution (SGK). It was done for that reason," he said.

We went to Esencan Hospital. Then they referred us to Güney.

The birth had taken place by the time I arrived by car. When I went to the hospital, they said pay 8 thousand liras. I wanted to pay by card, they didn't accept it. They said 4 thousand in cash, 4 thousand by card.

They said your wife's condition is critical, we need to take her into intensive care. Songül Hanım gave me all the information. Later, Damla Atak gave information, and Batuhan Çetin gave information at night. Songül Hoca said the child's condition is very good. 3 days later, whatever happened, they said the child died. Then my sister called me, they said the child got worse.

They said we will refer the child to Bağcılar Medilife Hospital because there is no room here. I said okay. Dursun Eryılmaz had dealt with it at first. At first, they told me the child's heart has a hole, then they said heart failure. They said he needs surgery.

They said milk is needed. While going to Kanuni to get milk, they called me again. They said your child got worse. They said it's like there's another disease in the child, but let another doctor come after midnight, then we will diagnose. Then they wanted 3 thousand TL for the doctor who would come from outside at night. I asked my brother for money, he sent it.

They said he will die 80-90 percent. There is a 10 percent chance of survival, and even then he would be disabled. Then in the morning they said we lost your child.
